Ice Cream Fun Camp 2023

Racine

Last week was a one day camp, Ice Cream Fun.  The goal for the day was to make an apron from an old pair of jeans and make some ice cream in a bag.

Milani

We started by cutting a pair of jeans apart and then shaping them into the apron shape with the hem of the leg as the top of the apron.  I cut their fabric into strips that they sewed together to bind the edges of the apron.
Colton

I helped them turn the corners for the bottom part of the apron and I did press the binding for the top part of the apron.

Maggie

They had a great time mixing their ice cream though they did start to complain about their hands getting cold.  They enjoyed eating it right from the bag, the leftovers went into the freezer while we finished up with the aprons. Milani and Colton finished their aprons but Racine and Maggie didn't.  Maggie came back the next day to finish when I had a 'make up' camp for those that didn't finish their slippers in Cozy at Home Camp.  Racine will finish her apron when she comes back in the fall.

Cozy at Home Camp

All the projects

Last week was Cozy at Home camp.  I had Emma, Milani, Roisin and Carmela.  There were only three projects but one was a pair of slippers using faux fur.

The pillowcase had an overlapped opening versus the open end.  I cut the fabrics for the girls and they pieced them together.  They also did a fancy stitch next to the small accent strip.  Milani had only one fabric for her pillowcase but I found some coordinating fabrics in my stash for her to use.

Next up was a hair wrap for after their shower.  They cut their towel using the pattern I had drafted following some instructions I had.  They edge finished their cut pieces and then we did an embroidered monogram.  Then a piece of elastic was sewn in place and the two pieces sewn together.  Then they sewed on their buttons.

Then came the slippers.  Oh what a mess the faux fur made.  Wednesday evening after camp, I did help by doing the last of the cutting for them.  Even with that, no one finished their slippers so I held another three hour sewing day the following week for them to finish up.  With a bit of help from me Emma, Roisin and Carmela got them done.  Unfortunately Milani was not able to come.  Some things I learned, you cannot use a "sunbrella" type fabric for this project as it melts and you needed to use fusible interfacing.  Also the longer faux fur is not recommended in the directions and they were right, it was much more difficult to cut, pin and sew.

The girls had fun but if I do this camp again I would skip the decorative stitching on the pillowcase and possibly the monogram to allow for more time with the slippers.
